Green Energy Biomass in Vietnam |
Investment required: 2.5 million USD
Where Does GEB Make Its Investments? Jatropha biomass as sustainable biofuel feedstock
- Demand for biodiesel feedstocks will grow from US$18 billion in 2010 to US$71 billion by 2020*
- Petroleum price (set to rise for decades) remains the strongest driver to biodiesel feedstock prices
- Feedstock comprises 80% of biodiesel's cost structure and disproportionately rewards the feedstock producer. Therefore, at this time GEB will not invest in refining – only feedstock production

Invest in a coffee project in Laos |

Investment required: 4 million USD
The targeted IRR is 30-35% for a 7-8 year investment period, high even for developing markets (especially given that our base case is built very conservatively and assumes coffee prices 65% below the current historically high market price for Arabica coffee and 35% below for the Robusta variety).
Brief summary of the current status of the project:
- The company operated in Laos since 2006. The company has a secured a Foreign Investment Permit, a five year income tax holiday and a 40-year land lease for the milling operation and 50 ha of land for growing coffee has been approved by the Governor of the Province for the first plot. Over time the target is to lease 1,000 hectares.
- The suitability of the climate and soils for growing coffee has been reviewed by an independent study and the initial pipeline targets identified.
- A pre-harvest money advance programme is established and operational with the local outgrowers to secure the coffee volumes until the own production is ramped up. 422 MT has already been purchased since 2009.
- The parent company will take up to 1/3 of production, reducing the topline risk considerably and the rest will be sold to other US and European coffee roasters. The experienced US back-office staff will also assume the responsibility for handling financing, logistics and other functions where local talent pool is constrained.
- The farms will be managed to fulfil strict criteria on sustainability, both in terms of protecting the environment to maintain the productive capacity of the land, and to provide fair and equitable working conditions for all employees.
